The decision that football arena construction ought to be delayed in the name of fiscal responsibility, as unexpected flood disasters inflate the budget deficit, has merit. However, much money would be saved if we also abandoned plans to have trade commissioners for NSW all over the world. Cutting obvious waste and prioritising productive goals should see arena upgrades and flood victims better managed. To maintain the goodwill of flood victims, the NRL should stage at least one game in Lismore this year to raise town morale and show support. The NRL does not need a brand new stadium to work its magic and inspire the spirits of those hard-pressed by the ravages of nature.
