In this season, as we celebrate the birth (in the line of King David) of Jesus of Nazareth, no one in the entire world will argue that the Son of God was not Jewish. During 2000 years in Christian Europe, strong ethical principles evolved from divine biblical inspiration, proving to be the foundations of the great democracies today, trumpeting our religious, social and political freedoms. Australia has a great debt to the Jewish people for being a positive influence in our history and the cultivation of excellence in music, invention, literature, medicine, research and discovery, military success, science, politics and the evolving fruits of our Christian principles, which probably become naught if its Jewish foundation is ablated. Piers Akerman is right to call out the shallow fools in government today whose cacophony of ill-informed pronouncements claims to represent the majority view on the Jewish people among us (“A sellout of .our values, ” Sunday Telegraph 15/12). I stand with the Jewish people of Australia. I call on everyone to speak up fearlessly, lest the shame of the German people in the 1930s is relived here. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 22Dec2024
