A $7.2bn program to rebuild Queensland’s Bruce Highway is long overdue and should be matched immediately by the Opposition parties (“Snapping at the press is no way to win elections”, DT, 7/1). That said, it is true that packaging programs with catchy slogans might be harder for some politicians than signing the cheques to get the work done. Rolling off the tongue with perfect alliteration, the “build back better” slogan has been around since Bill Clinton in July 2005 addressed the UN about post tsunami recovery. Since then it has been poached by plagiarism-prone dullards like Boris Johnson (2020), Joe Biden (2021) and the G7 (2021). Anthony Albanese joined the throng on Monday, sadly allowing a great idea to be dampened with cheap wording which is confusing, overused and mocks his capacity for iconic branding when most needed.
