Repetitively enacting the same solutions for longstanding problems and getting similarly disappointing results is very dumb human behaviour and is even worse public policy. At the Central Coast on the weekend, large crowds were right to protest the heinous murder of a young woman. But directing well-founded rage at politicians is erroneous. Our ridiculous expectations of local politicians assumes they are smart, have the right connections to change legislation, have unlimited funding and consider this current issue more pivotal than the hundreds of other problems that challenge their consciences and keep them awake at night. Instead, the solution surely lies with the courts. Stop trusting known criminals on our streets. This system is an independent branch of government, giving too much leeway to magistrates. Surely justice should be seen to be done by broadcasting most cases in the interest of public confidence. One must exclude cases where victims of crime are disadvantaged by this process but otherwise we deserve to be warned when dangerous thugs are wandering our streets.
