I wouldn’t want to be running against Hunter Karam for Young Sydneysider of the Year in an outstanding competition supported by The Daily Telegraph, even though I might have been disqualified anyway on an age basis. (“Hunter’s mental fitness crusade a life-saver”. DT, 19/6). Focusing on the tragic epidemic of youth suicide, Hunter is generating discussion with his charity, the Mental Fitness Collective and implementing tools for men to see mental fitness as complimenting and balancing physical muscle building. In a week when Billy Slater called out Origin-based banter for being abusive and derogatory, the recent suicide of a former Queensland coach showed that no one is immune from the pangs of self-doubt and hopelessness. New approaches must be tested as we collectively strive to highlight how valuable each life really is. Thank you Hunter for keeping this sometimes taboo subject firmly in the headlines.
