There is no doubt that great wartime leaders are almost a different species to those who rule the great democracies in peacetime (“Nothing but weakness from our lady of woe” DT, 16/6). The gently-gently approach from the master of motherhood statements, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, is well suited to her fantasy world of milk and honey where we all blissfully get along. But embracing a Chamberlain-like belief in peacefulness can be a self-deceptive tool, which historically has misled the good-hearted, as tyrants brought time to unleash their well hidden infamy. The declared intent of the Supreme Ayatollah has been Israel’s annihilation. The whole world should be supporting Israel “loud and proud” just as the repressed people of Iran now demonstrate in their streets.
