The upcoming 11th anniversary of the destruction of Malaysian Airliner MH17 on 17th July must indeed be a source of sadness and misgivings for the families of 38 Australians and the 260 other victims. (Court rules Russia killed civilians on MH17, 11/7). Oddly, the country where an aircraft accident occurs is primarily responsible for investigating the crash, as dictated by international aviation law. This is outlined in the Convention on International Civil Aviation and its Annex 13. Because of the exile of Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka in February 2014 after the coup and the sacking of Viktor Shokin in March 2016 after he launched investigations into corruption by Burisma, there has been no local investigation of this terrible crash.
