Federal Labor MP for Gilmore Fiona Phillips is surely wrong to criticise the appointment of former Liberal state MP Andrew Constance as general manager of Shoalhaven City Council. (“Jobs for mates”, DT, 1/10). There is no more blood and guts political adversity at any level of elected government than the bowels of our polarised local councils. General managers might be paid well but longevity is not in their political DNA. Former President of the NSW Legislative Council John Ajaka lasted only 18 months at the Liberal controlled Liverpool Council, finally being blindsided into oblivion. Current ructions at Parramatta Council might see the departure of our tremendous CEO Gail Connolly. MP Fiona Phillips ought to keep her powder dry as Mr Constance unwittingly meanders through the minefield that is local government. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 2Oct2025
