| With 151 of the 193 UN affiliated nations already recognising the state of Palestine and ignoring the 1933 Montevideo criteria for statehood, much of the current hysteria about Australia’s idiotic recognition is surely just a storm in a tea cup in the grand scale of things. (“Albanese’s Palestine call rewards Hamas”, DT, 22/9). The mantra of self righteous virtue resonating around the UN has surely been naught but a fantasy of idealism, fit only for Hollywood, fudged perhaps with a touch of George Orwell’s 1984 Newspeak, yet in reality achieving little substance on the ground for Palestinians or Israelis. Relevant only for homegrown consumption, Albanese’s actions will rewrite our US relationship, alienate the Labor Party’s longstanding friendship with the local Jewish community and richly earn him the resounding and long-lasting title as Australia’s worst PM.
