Congratulations to News Corp and its diligent editors who conceived the concept of a social media ban to stop suicidal ideation among our fragile children. (“Unstoppable belief has set our kids free”. ST, 7/12). Addressing the UN about her daughter’s suicide, Emma Mason spoke of the audience freezing in awe, surely a common response to such a taboo subject. No topic could evoke such intense emotions, blending remorse, frustration and love in a vacuum of hopelessness for what should have been. The Australian government should hold its head high for persisting in this campaign despite serious headwinds from avid opponents. “Free speech” that allows emotional bullying, denigration and vicious “mob rule” online does not deserve the mantle of protection availed by the ethical visionaries writing laws about freedom of expression. The next step to protect children from suicide is to expose the brainwashing associated with global warming and the fallacy of end-of-the-world rhetoric. Tragically, children are believing it.
