News that former neo-Nazi anti-Semite Joshua Bonehill-Paine has been preselected in the UK for a council seat at the upcoming local government elections in 2027 might set alarm bells ringing far and wide (“Tories select former Nazi”, DT, 6/8). The political left would certainly have a field day if such a candidate hoped to run in Australia for One Nation, perhaps even sounding the death knell for the entire party before a single vote was cast. Conservative UK leader Kemi Badenoch believes she is spot-on endorsing the rueful Bonehill-Paine, having experienced his own “road-to-Damascus” moment and deserving of a second chance. But leopards and their spots don’t change. Sadly, as history is repeating itself, we are reminded another conservative leader Neville Chamberlain dished out a few hapless “second chances” of his own to the world’s top Nazi and that didn’t work out too well.
