Shaping up for a fight, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore is cutting more than a few corners to reduce the cost of her grand plaza in the city centre, signalling that any semblance of a truce or love triangle between her, the government and business is as lifeless as a Piazza San Marco tile. Minister Paul Scully must see that the only thing “right” about this square plan is the “angles”. For the ratepayers, it’s a monstrous square peg in a perpetual circle of well-rounded debt. Scully must terminate the project now. Metaphorically speaking only, the council should go back to square one (“Clover’s Corner cops a cutback”, DT, 30/9). Local businesses are obviously not in Moore’s inner circle. Councillors should get fair and square with their ratepayers. If flush with funds and obsessed with squares, a more humanitarian approach might be to feed the homeless with regular square meals if the Lord Mayor yearns to improve the ambience of our town centre.
