Recently, long-term prisoners, convicted of murder have been released despite loud protests. (“Why let a killer walk free?”, 10/9). At the time of sentencing, the victims’ families applaud the judgment for the long duration of imprisonment. But the same judgment is derided when the inmates have served their time of punishment and are due for release. Some letter-writers have demanded that no prisoner be released if the victims’ bodies remain missing. An innocent inmate would never be released under those terms. A recent television documentary told the story of eight people falsely convicted of murder, spending up to 25 years in prison. A fallible judicial system and the deteriorating mental health of inmates who have been falsely convicted should be taken Into account when debating these issues of prisoner release.
