The offer to abolish red tape at the end of three terms of state government is surely an unconvincing “abracadabra moment” from Premier Dominic Perrottet, who is obviously suffering a near-empty pork barrel. (Slash & earn: Dom’s billion-dollar blitz on barriers to business, 2/2). Yet, innovative ideas with a fresh collaborative approach are demanded by all hardworking voters. The hearts and minds of our young might indeed resonate with adding sunset clauses to much legislation on the state’s books to address problems of the past, enacted after dubious political compromises with long-dead minorities. Legal complexity inhibits enterprise, enriches lawyers and occasionally entrenches loopholes which might indeed be deemed deliberate by the cynical. Outlining a clear formula for eradicating red tape in volumes of outdated state laws might give the Premier a much- needed credibility boost and, even, an election win.
