Fans of the Hollywood classic Field Of Dreams were perhaps too influential in the Health Department when billions of dollars were spent on hospital upgrades across the state. (Ghost wards, 13/12). The “build-it-and-they-will-come” philosophy only applied to the patients, not the staff. Like many others, I wondered where the staff would come from, even for metropolitan renovations. The depersonalisation of staff that accompanied the corporatisation of hospitals has progressively eroded the critical sense of belonging, which is the bedrock for cultivating morale. Staffing existing institutions is not easy. The current toxic culture of bullying, excessive bureaucracy and mental health challenges among our young doctors won’t fade away with a shiny new building. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 14Dec2021.
