US President Donald Trump is right to complain about the “all talk and no action” of his NATO allies, who are unfortunately bridled domestically with large Middle Eastern populations, leading them to feel compromised on how to respond. Europe knows that nothing triggers local terrorism more than Westerners fighting in Muslim lands. However, Australia should not be grouped with Europe as Trump evaluates his allies. His assertion that the US doesn’t need Australia is completely wrong. We have been a moral bedrock for US foreign policy in wars past. Valuing freedom, the rule of law and democracy, we have always projected a courageous adherence to human decency. Our US relationship is unique, forged in the bonds of the battlefield, blessed with Judaeo-Christian values and perpetually revered in our cherished war memorials. No other nation has stood as brothers in arms to our American allies during all conflicts for the past century.
