Steve Ngeow (Letters, 9/5) is perhaps unfair to quote the mantra about councils only being concerned about rates, roads and rubbish when it is clear that there is public pressure to provide many more services including libraries and the books within. (Council’s gay book ban row, DT 8/5). The question of whether the council has a duty of care to manage the selection of books which children are then exposed to within their precincts is fairly asked. Only if there is strong public opposition should councillors be censured. Steve Christou is right to canvas the opinions of his electors and ensure their wishes are heard on the floor of the council. Each council has its own profile of voters which adds to a rich diversity of opinions valuable to a multicultural Australia. There is no virtue in Arts Minister John Graham mandating a Labor Party ideology statewide where it is never going to be popular. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 10May2024
