A big congratulations to the articulate Professor Gary Martin, who’s exposé of the machinations of gaslighting and its modern applications to the workforce is mind boggling (Be alert to the devious gas lighter in your workplace – Opinion, 8/4). Derived from a play where a husband dims the gas lights to make the wife think she is crazy, I guess husbands might be well warned to use other means to save power, lest their motives are scrutinised. Misleading work colleagues, deriding them, bullying them into self-doubt and sabotaging performance all amounts to aggressive drives for personal success at any cost. Gee, that sounds like an average day in a politician’s office. Prospective politicians will now have to go off to Canberra with no practice in workplaces beforehand, if Professor Martin has his way. If I sound too cynical, blame the pollies! Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 9April2024
