With news that our jails are emptying out faster than dunny paper in a pandemic, I guess that our state has cause for both celebration and an opportunity for making money. (Cells shut as crim numbers tumble, ST, 3/9). Whether due to a pandemic, defence lawyers lifting their game or a newly discovered morality among our criminally challenged, empty jail cells should be leased to other states to solve their overcrowded prison crises. In a country historically founded on the orderly transportation of the incarcerated, this excellent solution will not be foreign to us at all. The prospects of being displaced interstate from loved ones might indeed add incentive to stick to what’s legal. Our state budget might indeed get balanced yet as we seize on creative opportunities as they are presented. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 10Sep2023.
