Thankfully, not many jobs allow dismissal for first-time marital infidelity. (Forgive me fans, for I have strayed, 7/11). While penitent Pastor Carl Lentz has admitted a dalliance outside his marriage, we should applaud his honesty. More appropriately, Hillsong should have acted with a suspension and counselling, which would have resonated with the global theme of Christianity and the seriousness of this breech. Thank goodness Bathsheba-smitten King David never relied on Hillsong’s mercies. Moral superiority in our Christian leadership is surely a delusion, setting impossible expectations for all. Christianity is a religion of healing for the fallen, something needed now more than ever by Pastor Lentz. Abandonment is a poor substitute for forgiveness or supposed pastoral care.
