Our multicultural society in Australia works well when we value diversity and the rich benefits of our differences in innovative problem solving, stimulating creativity and showcasing the world’s best in cultural heritage. This same multicultural model will fail hopelessly if narrow competitive intolerance is nurtured at any level. Freely exchanging ideas between us must be seen as dialogue that provides a path for understanding, reconciliation and harmony. Contrary to the commentary of wine expert Harry Hunter when confronting a Jewish group placing posters of kidnap victims, it is surely not good enough to expect a forced, belated apology as recompense when caught out on camera (Going postal in King St feud,10/11). The excellent advice from Lachlan Murdoch at the annual News Awards (We must tackle hatred:Murdoch,10/11) ought to be heeded by Hunter. If you can justify anti-Semitism in your thinking, it is surely only a matter of time before all races will be hated. With prejudice never actually based on real, objective, universal truths, Murdoch is right to extol the vocation of journalism to spearhead truthfulness and honesty in society. The federal government’s current (Big Brother) proposal that it legislate against Orwellian misinformation is laughable. Only an independent media, with an army of letters to the editor contributors, can faithfully be trusted to do that. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 14Nov2023.
