Andrew Bolt succinctly makes the case that true journalism is identifying the “who, what, how, when and where” of news items. (ABC code of silence, 2/12). The journalist’s skill is telling the story with the intent of truthfulness, honesty and integrity. Political skewering of news items is self-defeating, as the failing ABC outlets are quickly learning. Hiding the full description of the “who” in any story cannot be constructive. The new ABC journalists’ reporting rules reek of George Orwell’s 1984. Blatant bias vaporises credibility and the “fake news” label is irretrievably applied. Pandering to the feelings of minorities will not create a cohesive community mindset if such actions continue to alienate the silent, but no longer listening, majority.
