While regular letter writers are often regaled when falling off this mortal perch, (a rare instance when the pen was not mightier than the sword), it is certainly appropriate for an editor also to receive fond bonhomie when departing from his esteemed role in the most successful newspaper in Australia (‘Goodbye, it’s been a privilege’, ST, 23/6). Mick Carroll has presided over this paper at a challenging time in world history. While alternate social media has manifested the worst expressions of human nature, culminating in over 3000 people in the UK being prosecuted last year for bullying, spreading fake news and threatening others, carefully editing opinion and honestly acting as a referee on issues with a social conscience is a highly commendable achievement. Newspapers are indeed a great resource to writers, ensuring an objective, fair and insightful perspective to filter our opinions which may occasionally be misinformed, biased or innocently misleading.
