No spectacular headline would suitably encompass the heroism of valiant Sydney-sider Jarrod Hawkins as he rescued four children from an incendiary deathtrap at his neighbor’s home on Sunday morning. (In pitch black, fire hero ran toward the coughs, DT 9/7). Avoiding initial publicity and humbly underplaying his part, there is something palpably decent about the shy father of three, who stands as a striking role model for this generation. What a desperate state our society is in when families implode, domestic violence abounds and politicians fail to make the link with the unhappiness from cost of living pressures, the threat of homelessness, excessive immigration and the abandonment of cheap energy resources. Seen only in fiduciary terms, there is no place when looking at the national accounts for the events to be recorded which occurred on a heartbroken street in Lalor Park last Sunday. All families and domestic relationships might surely be at risk as this government remains single-minded in its ideologies. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 10July2024
