James Morrow is correct to offer such a clear perspective on the recent ruling of the US Supreme Court, reversing an error after 49 years (The fight for right to life – Opinion, 29/6). The separation of powers by the branches of government must be more savagely defended in all democracies. Activist judges must never be overruling the will of the people by sidelining the legislation of those elected. The courts should only resolve unintended or unexpected contradictions in law as they pass judgment on those failing to comply. Various US states have elected governments to enact or ban abortion legislation, taking responsibility for the decision-making following popular debate. The system works well when that happens. Those protesting should harness their rage and focus on their local state if it is not reflective of their views. The surrender of power by the Supreme Court in this case should be welcomed. not berated. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 30Jun2022.
