Labor politicians are refashioning the issues in dispute against China and a beleaguered leadership is futilely echoing failed promises of what a “future government I lead” won’t do. (Labor tightens belt on China division in ranks, 26/5). Thank goodness their hapless meanderings are occurring in the stagnant isolation of Opposition. The current criticism of the Chinese government is aimed at its refusal to demonstrate a cooperative spirit in approaching the cause of COVID-19, with the singular intent of avoiding a recurrence. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has correctly identified this core error. Dictatorships don’t want to be accountable. The Australian people have no problem with our wonderful Chinese immigrants, students or beneficial trade relationships. For the argument to escalate beyond accountability is an over-reaction. The Chinese government should find no allies among flexibly immoral Labor opportunists. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta. 27May2020.
