While Opposition leaders rarely set the agenda and are very much the plaything of the government of the day, the metamorphosis into Prime Minister can be done with eye-opening revelation and surprise beyond belief. (‘Albo’s sad official farewell’, Sunday Telegraph, 18/9). My initially unkind character assessment of newly-minted PM Anthony Albanese had to be completely re-evaluated when he kept coming up trumps as he paraded through the world corridors of power never missing a step. Without the boisterous, bullyboy anathema of his predecessor, the softly spoken Australian leader is surely a God-send. He has projected class and charisma while managing our response to the Queen’s passing. Like all Boy Scouts who might have been winners of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, he had his own non leaky ink pen to sign condolences. Articulating grief with a unique sensitivity, one is left hoping Queen Elizabeth’s lessons on public service to community are well learnt during Albanese’s apprenticeship.
