Since a male journalist in 1906 coined the mocking title “suffragette”, (based on the word suffragist meaning those seeking the right to vote) the obstacles to fairness for the fairer sex have been effusive indeed. (“Parliament must now define what it means to be a woman” – Peta Credlin, Sunday Telegraph, 1/9). Yet, finally in the 21st Century, we have seen the advent of equal opportunity as history has heralded women succeeding in the highest positions (Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Premier Gladys Berejiklian). Peta Credlin is right to argue that the advantages gained by women will ironically be lost if the aggressive trans lobby can occupy “women’s only” spaces. The story of Roxanne Tickle might be seen as a trans lobby success, but we must see a future government with a backbone address the failures of the Sex Discrimination Act.
