Many might recall the outbreak of celebrations in the West Bank and Gaza after the 911 attack in New York. A similar celebration occurred across the world last year after the October 7 bloodbath in Israel. While Australia is a free country, the warlike approach to Israel during rallies here must be curtailed when provocative calls to action may unbridle lawlessness on a grand scale. Peaceful gatherings expressing regret for slain leadership is a worldwide phenomenon. But we must not sympathise with warmongers who have shunned peace, even when land was offered in exchange. Ironically, as Iran fired 181 ballistic missiles into Israel, the only deaths were on the West Bank where local Palestinian Arabs had gone outside to celebrate. Being killed by your own side won’t count for martyrdom in the next life. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 3rd Oct2024.
