No doubt, the Sydney-Melbourne rivalry is fun to highlight as we wage a tongue-in-cheek literary battle against our southern neighbour, often providing excellent wit, while mocking their many failures (“Kicked into touch by the Vics again”, DT, 7/2). But, NSW Premier Chris Minns must not be blinded by the glittering appeal and razzmatazz of sporting events. Costing large initial outlays in a ridiculous auction with public money, ego-driven politicians should be reminded of Dan Andrews and the Commonwealth Games disgrace. I’m uncertain of escape clauses in such cases, but promoters investing in Victoria ought to be wary. And, realists ought to be cynical until the economic benefits actually materialise. Minns is focused on the cost of living in NSW and is aware that competition for the government dollar is hard pressed and ultimately inflationary. Even if these spectacular events were held in Sydney, many could not afford to go. For economic credibility alone, focusing on real problems and not short-term distractions, the NSW Premier will surely survive our reckless, profligate spending PM and his Victorian counterpart.
