News that the elephants in Taronga Zoo have been shipped to Adelaide is very sad for a city now without this most empathetic of creatures, instinctively displaying more social awareness and social intelligence than their human peers (“Trunks packed, so it’s time to go”, DT, 30/4). With the scourges of poaching and hunting sadly decimating these elegant jungle heavyweights due to the evil love of ivory treasure, the zoos of the world have offered safe havens and deserve much praise. The Monarto Safari Park offers a more expansive home and will be less confining to the natural migratory instincts of these jungle kings. Until Taronga adopts more calves in the future, perhaps we Sydneysiders will need to find alternate axioms to describe ugly buildings, having a good memory or ignoring the obvious unspoken intrusion in the room.
