Like him or not, US social media icon and religious champion Charlie Kirk was certainly respectful of opponents and was not one to breathe fire and brimstone on those resisting his well-constructed arguments. In an unthreatening and kindly manner, he educated those with radical views and would probably even forgive those now celebrating his martyrdom. (“Great news for America”, DT, 19/9). While the wave of dismissals for offensive commentary about him is not nurturing the unity he sought, all sides of US politics should unite in regaling the courage of Tyler Robinson’s family and boyfriend for their heartbreaking intervention. Rapidly attributing blame without further shootouts, protesting or the spawning of social-media conspiracy theories will contribute some healing to the dislocated American psyche. Some mercy and kindness might be needed from all sides for Charlie’s “turning point” to be reached in the days and months ahead. RIP Charlie Kirk. Alan Sexton, Parramatta 21Sept2025
