Unless One Nation members rein in Pauline Hanson and nurture some wisdom in her utterings, we should all expect the unbelievable opinion polls that have catapulted this rabble to the apex of political popularity across Australia to evaporate overnight, as it often has in the past. While initially popular in the Queensland state elections in 1998 winning 11 seats, there has been a consistent pattern of dishevelled policy making and limbo leadership that proves inconsistent with modern successful politics. As a protest party, the disaffected have sought refuge in the billowing, vacuous slogans against immigration and disrespect for religion (“Hanson lashed over Muslim slur”, DT, 18/2). Pauline Hanson is outrageous to claim that there is no such thing as a “good Muslim”. Our neighbours in Muslim countries should be affronted. In relation to local heroes, I also beg to differ. Ahmed Al Ahmed, is a champion of Bondi and a man who’s virtue will be celebrated long after the next federal election flushes One Nation back to deserved oblivion.
