Reading of the crusade by the family of Steven Tougher to establish stronger legislative punishment for those harming emergency services workers, I was amazed to be reminded that the events unfurled over three years ago. It seemed far more recent and our memory of his misfortune has not faded (“Plea to honour Steven’s legacy”, DT, 23/2). When horrific events occur, how predictable our politicians are, promising justice and retribution to appease an angry populace, only to see their resolve unwound by technicalities. The murder of Steven was perceptively worse than most, because the perpetrator had mental illness, shielding him from justice and the family from any punitive consolation. In lieu of satisfaction, this family is seeking a legacy for Steven, a legislative framework that should make other emergency workers safe. No other family should face what they have dealt with. They are asking for nothing more than what was promised in the aftermath of their son’s murder. All of NSW should be appalled by the maudlin response from our failing Attorney-General, Michael Daley. It’s time for Premier Minns to step up. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 24Feb2026
