Famous for his overuse of the introductory phrase “they are going to say” when calling the action during NRL games, commentator and popular Fox Sports personality Warren Smith has had to let others do the talking after battling cancer of the larynx (“Close to calling shots again”, DT, 21/9). Away for the 2026 season, Warren has endured laser therapy and stents, but with a clean bill of health, his voice therapy should see him back on our TVs next season. If fear of occasional mispronunciations or slurred words instils terror in our rejuvenated Warren, he might gain considerable reassurance by lowering his expectations and watching old recordings of the inimitable legendary 1970s NRL commentator Rex Mossop. An adoring Sydney public loved his regular mishmash of the English language, making up words as the game unfolded and proving a fascination for both inarticulate footy fanatics and curious wordsmiths, loving Rex’s quips. Hopefully, “they are going to say” Warren is back on top at Fox next year. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 22Sept2026
