News that Premier Dominic Perrottet has refused access to NSW’s prisons to the highly politicised UN must be applauded. (UN prison inspectors jet out in a big huff, 24/10). If the federal government insists on signing UN conventions involving state-based responsibilities, why should state treasurers pick up the cost of UN auditing and repair resulting from onerous obligations? Disrespectfully, it seems our Canberra bureaucracy forgets that we are a federation. Little doubt, increasing the size of prisoner cells might be a costly fix. Well done, Mr Premier, for serving up a rhetorical ‘pie in the face’ to our cumbersome visitors. Not the response they expected as they bemoaned the size of jailhouse sandwiches.
