As the prospect looms large that the federal Labor government will backtrack on promises made at last year’s election, an exposition in the Daily Telegraph detailing the extent of investment property portfolios among MPs makes interesting reading (“The four pollies driving changes to negative gearing have no skin in the game – but plenty of others do”, DT, 7/5). Providing rental accommodation by investing in Australian real estate is to be applauded. The idiocy of Labor shaming those who have shown a belief in the housing market is to be decried. MP Andrew Charlton may have initially bought a beautiful Mason St home in Parramatta to promote local connection and dispel issues of being parachuted into this electorate, but his second investment purchase is something he should be proud of as he extols our growing city. Former National Party minister Dr David Gillespie had 19 investment properties across NSW when serving our country. Surely that courage and commitment is sadly lacking among most of the current class of forlorn pollies. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 8May2026
