Young people need to be proactive before getting into a friend’s car. They must know they can always call mum and dad if the driver has been drinking. They must be empowered to tell the driver to slow down. A school tour across NSW showing video of traumatised youth in emergency departments and horrifying “morgue” visits by heartbroken parents might be a useful next step. The message won’t get through if it’s not sent in a comprehensible format. In the minds of the instinctively rebellious, threats have proven to be a failed strategy.
