Popular Lord Mayor Donna Davis is right to advocate for the wonderful city of Parramatta, but must do so with crystal-clear ideas that are achievable and focused. (Vision for arts mecca at Parra, 17/3). Asking artists, who think on a different wavelength to us pragmatists, what they want often yields diverse answers. “Cash” is the one common denominator. However, in Ms Davis’s commentary, that cash is anybody else’s except the Council’s. Several unused heritage-listed buildings in Parramatta would be an ideal site to support an arts precinct. The University of Western Sydney could sponsor the precinct to run courses in writing, painting, dance and drama. A heritage setting would be inspirational for such endeavours. The future of the precinct would be determined by output. If Ms Davis is convinced of the broad talent base, this should be assured. Alan Sexton, North Parramatta 18Mar2022.
