Writing brilliantly in Friday’s The Daily Telegraph, Ukrainian ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko shows his diplomatic skills, setting a tone of reconciliation and foresight as he considers the possibility of peace in his homeland . (“It’s all up to Russia to end killing in Ukraine” – Opinion, DT, 14/3). While any negotiator knows never to accept the first offer, one should expect some to-and-fro from the Russian side as a permanent peace takes shape. With much love and gratitude to Australia, it was terrific to read his acceptance of the idea that Australians would be very welcome as peacekeepers. Winning the hearts and minds of the Ukrainian people must surely validate our premier position to now help them win the peace. We are surely critical to realising long term reconciliation and rejuvenation for a new generation of Ukrainians. Our critical value cannot be ignored by Washington.
