Understanding seven languages, working for 20 years as an Augustine missionary and later archbishop in Chiclayo, Peru, a diocese sounding very like his home town of Chicago, Robert Prevost stands as an outstandingly credentialed Pope for our times. The symbolism of his new name cannot be missed, choosing to perpetuate the brilliant works of Leo 13th, a pragmatist who urged social justice, education and the need for a fair balance between the forces of labour and capital. Attacking social evils in the world during the last quarter of the 19th century, Leo 13th initiated the famous “Prayer to St Michael” ‘, included in every rosary and Latin mass since his pontificate. An outspoken voice for the downtrodden, the first Pope from the USA, Leo 14th has posted negatively on social media about President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in the past. His new role promoting the rule of law and sustaining ethical behaviour should bring an inspirational balance to ensure those persecuted in the future enter the USA legally and are welcomed as their constitution demands.
