What a shame that Olivia Lancuba’s feel-good story about beautiful lambs wasn’t on the front page of The Daily Telegraph, creating some happy vibes for the state amid lots of gloomy news (“A doll who can mow the lawns”, DT, 15/9). Olivia, however, undersells the value of her sheepish subjects, ignoring their role as fertilisers and pest controllers with the capacity to alert farmers of trespassers of all kinds. Their intelligence is often underestimated but in my rural childhood, our pet lamb affectionately walked with us to and from the farm gate for the school bus. Seeing us disembark from the bus, “Lambsie” bolted across the paddock with all the love in her overly excited little beating heart. What a shame city kids are missing out on such fantastic experiences on the farms of our country. Thanks Olivia for your insights and for rekindling wonderful memories.
